Every Monday morning at the border between the Dominican Republic and Haiti (Pedernales and Anse – a – Pitre), hundreds of Haitians cross the narrow bridge to enter the Dominican Republic.
But only temporarily: they are, in fact, allowed in a fenced field patrolled by the local police. This fence is set up as a market where Haitians try to sell their wares poor, mostly rice, fruit and foodstuffs to the Dominicans, who willingly take advantage of even lower prices than those of Pedernales.
Also some Dominican has his stall and sells Haitians american style shirts and some object unavailable in Haiti like exercise books for children, pens, american cigarettes …
Haitians must leave their documents when entering the fence that are then returned when they cross again the border to go back to Haiti.
